Tours from San Pedro de Atacama (Chile)

It is possible to enter Bolivia from Chile taking a tour from San Pedro de Atacama through the N.P. Eduardo Avaroa and the amazing Salar de Uyuni to Uyuni, or to Tupiza. The transfer from San Pedro to the Bolivian border is included in the tour.
Please be aware that there is a big difference in altitude with San Pedro de Atacama. There is a chance that you will get high altitude disease, so make sure that you are acclimatised before you undertake the tour.
The Jeep has oxygen on board for in case of emergency.

 

Important notes:
Due to climate and road conditions, for all tours through the Salar de Uyuni routes may vary and can sometimes be changed without notice, reason for which details of the tours through the Salar de Uyuni are only for reference, and are not to be taken as an exact itinerary of what the tours implies.
For tours to and from San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, also is applicable: If due to climate and/or road conditions the border crossing between Bolivia/Chile at Hito Cajón is closed, the tour will be diverted to the border crossing at Ollagüe, if possible. This diversion brings extra costs with it that are not included in the tour and that have to be paid by the client on the spot.


2 days

San Pedro de Atacama - Salar de Uyuni - Uyuni, private tour with basic accommodation


Around 8.00 hrs. you will be picked up from your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama to depart to the border at Hito Cajón. The Bolivian border is a shack in the middle of the desert, worth your first photo of the trip! You will get a stamp in your passport and than you will change transport and start your tour by Jeep.
Today you will visit Laguna Blanca (white lagoon) and Laguna Verde (green lagoon) and see the nearby Licancabur Vulcano.
You will drive through the Salvador Dalí Desert to arrive at the natural thermal water of the hot springs (Polques).
The journey continues passing the Laguna Chalviri and the geyser Sol de Mañana. Next stop will be at Laguna Colorada (red lagoon), after which you will drive through the Silolí Desert where you will see the Stone Tree, a rock formation of over eight meters high.
Then you will pass the so called Lagunas Altoandinas: Laguna Ramaditas, Laguna Honda, Laguna Chiarkota, Laguna Hedionda and Laguna Cañapa.
You will get to a viewpoint from where you will have a good view of the semi-active Ollagüe Volcano. You will travel through the Salar de Chiguana to San Juan, where you will stay overnight in a basic accommodation.
On the second day after breakfast you will head to the Salar de Uyuni.
On the way you will visit the caves Cueva del Diablo and Galaxia Cristal. On the salt flat you will visit cactus island Incahuasi, where you can go for a short walk over the island along the huge cacti and enjoy the fabulous views over the salt flats.
You will have lunch here as well.
Later on you will visit the Salt Hotel, see Ojos del Salar (eyes of the salt flat), here bubbling gases escape from underneath the salt flat, and Montones de Sal (salt piles) at the spot where salt is extracted.
In Colchani handicrafts made of salt can be seen, as well as the process of making domestic salt, and the Salt Museum.
At the Train Cemetery near Uyuni you can see antique English trains that where brought to Bolivia many years ago and that are no longer in use.
Around 17.00 hrs. in the afternoon you will arrive in Uyuni.

The route will be adjusted a bit (you will cross the Salar de Uyuni on the last day), but the places of interest you will visit will be the same.
On the third day you can walk up the Tunupa Volcano to one of the viewpoints from which you will have an excellent view over the salt flats.
After that you will visit the archaeological site of Chullpares, pre-Inca mummies, in Coquesa. Just outside the village you might spot lamas and maybe also flamingos.
After that you cross the impressive salt flats once more.
On the way you will visit cactus island Incahuasi, where you can go for a short walk over the island along the huge cacti and enjoy the fabulous views over the salt flats.

On the second day you will enter the salt flats and drive to the cactus island Incahuasi. Here you will have lunch and you can go for a short walk over the island along the huge cacti to enjoy the fabulous views over the salt flats.
Later on you will visit the Salt Hotel, see Ojos del Salar (eyes of the salt flat); here bubbling gases escape from underneath the salt flat, and Montones de Sal (salt piles) at the spot where salt is extracted.

On the third and last day you will leave early. Close to Villa Mar you will pass the "bofedales", a grassy area where you are likely to see lamas, alpacas and vicuñas.
You continue the tour visiting Laguna Capina and Laguna Colorada (red lagoon).

Next stops will be at the geyser Sol de Mañana and at the hot springs and you will pass Laguna Chalviri.

Finally, after seeing Laguna Verde (green lagoon), the Volcano Licancabur and Laguna Blanca (white lagoon), you will reach the border crossing Hito Cajón where you will pay the tourist tax and make your connection at 13.00 hrs. with your transfer to San Pedro de Atacama.
