You will arrive at the archaeological site of Wiñawayna at an altitude of 2.650 m above sea level. After Machu Picchu this is the best remained Inca site. Wiñawayna is a beautiful site and a perfect example of how the Incas applied agriculture on terraces. In those days is was probably an "experimental laboratory" for agriculture purposes. The name Wiñawayna comes from a lovely orchid that exists in this area and means: eternal youth.
You will continue trekking by a small trail through the cloud forest until you reach Inti Punku (Gate of the Sun). From here you have a fantastic view over the most wonderful Inca citadel of Peru, Machu Picchu. It is an exceptional place where hikers like to unite to take their favourite photo of the holy Inca city.
From here you will descend to Machu Picchu and by bus you will be brought to Aguas Calientes.
Time permitting you can visit the hot springs of Aguas Calientes or have a nice stroll through the streets of the charming town. You will spend the night in Aguas Calientes in a hotel.

Trekking Machu Picchu from Cusco and back to Cusco, group tour or private tour

Day 1: Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Wayllabamba, walking time approximately 4 to 5 hrs.
You will be picked up from your hotel at 05.30 AM and brought to the train station of Ollantaytambo, this takes about two hours.
Here you can have breakfast if you wish and make some shopping before you start the bus ride to Piskacucho at 2.650 m. This is a small village along the railway Cusco - Machu Picchu at kilometre 82.
Here you have to show your original passport to start the Inca Trail; without original passport the entry will be denied.
Today´s hike is 12 km long. You cross the bridge over the Urubamba River and walk along the river bank over relatively flat terrain.
When you reach Miskay at 2.800 m you will have a brief rest.
From here there is a quite steep climb waiting to a higher plateau with an impressive view over the Inca building named Patallacta. After the explanation of your guide you will continue climbing up gradually for about two hours along a nice valley until you reach the place where the cook and the porters are waiting for you to have lunch.
The walk afterwards takes another two hours and is also uphill. You will enjoy spectacular views of Vilcanota at the other side of the Urumbamba River and the snow-capped mountain Veronica (5.832 m).
The camping place for the first night, Wayllabamba, is situated at 3.000 m.

Day 2: Wayllabamba - Warmiwañusca - Pacaymayo, walking time appr. 8 hrs.
You will have to get up early to have breakfast and start a 9 kilometres climb, going along a narrow gorge with exuberant vegetation and lovely streams. This is a hard part of the trekking, full of steps, but you can take it easy and stop wherever you want to have a rest, take photos or to tighten you shoelaces...
After you will have reached Lluluchapampa it is time to start the climb to the highest pass (4.200 m) of the trekking, Abra Warmihuañusca (Death Women pass). You will need about two hours to reach the pass. It is common that the group gathers at this place. Also here: take it easy! Take energy- and/or chocolate bars with you for extra energy. Drink a lot of water or chew coca leaves, it helps to prevent or reduce high altitude sickness.
From the pass it goes four kilometres downhill over a winding path full of steps.
Along the way lunch is served.
The area that you are crossing is full of bird species and the Andean Bear, also called Spectacled Bear, might still be around here. In the Pacaymayo Valley is your second camping place, at 3.650 metres.

Day 3: Pacaymayo - Puya Patamarka - Wiñawayna, walking time 8-9 hrs.
Today is the longest hiking day programmed: you will hike 15 km. But it is also the most impressive and interesting day because of the number of archaeological places you will see along the trail.
From the camp in the Pacaymayo Valley it starts going up directly to the Runkurakay pass at almost 4.00 meters. Halfway the climb you will visit the Runkurakay complex.
After the pass you will descend to Yanacocha and arrive at the next archaeological site, Sayacmarca (3.624 m).
After visiting this site you will hike into the cloud forest before starting the last climb to the 3rd pass, Abra de Phuyupatamarca (3.650 m). From here the rest of the trail is mainly downhill. On your way you will see the ruins of Phuyupatamarca.
At the end of the day you will arrive at your last camping site Wiñaywayna at 2.700 m near a restaurant. In Wiñaywayna you might have the opportunity to take a hot shower.
It is the last night before tomorrow you can admire Machu Picchu. Tonight you will say goodbye to the cook and the porters; they will take an early train back to Cusco tomorrow.

Day 4: Wiñawayna - Machu Picchu - Cusco, hiking time appr. 2 hrs. + the time on Machu Picchu
You will have to get up at 04.00 AM. Breakfast will be from 04.30 till 05.00 AM, because at 05.00 AM you have to be on the move to go to Inti Punku (Gate of the Sun). The hike up here takes about one hour over small trails through the cloud forest. From the Gate of the Sun you can probably enjoy the most wonderful sunrise over the mountains around Machu Picchu, depending on the season, the weather conditions and the camping place where you slept the night before.
From Inti Punku you walk down to Machu Picchu where your English speaking guide will give you a guided tour of appr. two hours, over this Inca site.
You might want to climb Huayna Picchu (with 2.720 m. about 360 m. higher than Machu Picchu), the famous mountain that is on the background of every classic Machu Picchu photo. It takes an hour to climb this mountain, by very steep steps. But once on top you will have breath taking views of Machu Picchu and the surroundings. There is a limit to the daily number of people that are allowed to climb Huayna Picchu. If you want, we can try to get hold on a ticket for Wayna Picchu for you at a small extra cost.
Afterwards you will have some free time to explore the site further on your own. In the afternoon you will return to Aguas Calientes.
Time permitting you can take a bath in the hot springs of Aguas Calientes.
From there you will continue to Cusco. Arrival time in Cusco is planned at 20.30 hrs.
