Cordillera de los Frailes Trekking, private tour
The Cordillera de los Frailes forms a big ridge that divides the departments of Chuquisaca and Potosí. The area which is home to the Jalq’a people, offers a great diversity of beautiful nature, culture and archaeology.
You will be picked-up from your hostal or hotel at 8.30 hrs. to travel by car in 1½ hrs. to the starting point of the trekking at the Chapel of Chataquila. From the chapel, situated on the rim of the Cordillera de los Frailes, you will walk down the Inca trail to Chaunaca while enjoying impressive views.
The hike takes about 3 hrs. and is mainly downhill and easy, but we advise to wear good hiking boots.
In Chaunaca you will have lunch.
Then you will be taken to the highest point of the canyon by car, where you will enjoy another spectacular view.
You will have the choice to cover the remaining distance to Potolo walking or by car.
In Potolo you will have time to explore the place and to visit a local Jalq’a family to see how they live and to see their typical weavings.
Around 19.00 hrs. dinner will be served. You will spend the night in a comfortable cabaña.
The 2nd day will be a long day; today you will have to walk about seven hours. From Potolo you will make a beautiful hike to Maragua, situated inside the crater. The views are great.
You will pass the small village of Chullpa's on the way. After appr. five hours hiking you will see the dinosaur footprints at Niñu Mayu. From here it takes another two hours to get to Maragua, where you will visit the community and explore the surroundings.
The stay overnight will be in a hostal or in a cabaña in Maragua.
The 3rd day is an easier day so you will have some time to spend in Maragua in the morning.
Then starts the 3 to 4 hrs. hike from Maragua to Marca Rumi and on to Quila Quila, with its colonial church. Here the car will be waiting for you.
You will have lunch and then return to Sucre, where you will be brought to your hostal or hotel.
